Breaking news: Sox acquire RHP Paul Byrd

News is just breaking that the Sox have acquired right handed pitcher Paul Byrd from Cleveland for a player to be named later or cash. It is speculated that Byrd will take over Clay Buchholz's spot in the rotation as the young pitcher has been struggling all season.

Byrd tossed a complete-game victory over Toronto Saturday. For the year he is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA in 22 starts for the Tribe. Not great numbers right?...but since the All-Star break, the 37-year-old right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA, the best such mark in the American League and second only to Arizona’s Randy Johnson (really, Randy Johnson is still alive?) in the majors.

Not sure if it is all that relevant or not, but Byrd has been linked to HGH in the past, including a report that he purchased 25K worth of HGH a few years back.

First, I like the move. Byrd inspires confidence in me for some reason.

Second, I've come to realize I probably would have used HGH, too. There, I said it.

Byrd was a pest for the Sox in the playoffs. He handled himself well there.

we'll be paying a pro-rated 7.5 million for a rental player...but in the end that really isn't much. I like the move on the surface, it gives us some greater insurance for the end of the rotation starters.

At the end of the day we don't know if Bartolo will make it back to the majors and be effective. We also know Clay Buchholz just doesn't have it this year and his confidence is busted. I like having Byrd in the 4th spot for now, and 5th spot when Wakefield comes back.

So what happens to Buccholz now? I'm a bit troubled by that end of it.

Saw the news here before I saw it on boston.com. Nice, man.

Anyone else want to claim Sheffield off waivers?

Buchholz will get one or two more starts, but with Colon coming up and this addition he's definitely the odd man out down the stretch.

and i hate Sheff...he should hang em up.

I like this move.

I just don't want to give up on Buchholz like this. What's the solution? AAA until next season? I just would rather see him keep going in the bigs right now. But maybe that's stupid, since I know it is a pennant race. Just feel like he's gonna break out of it.

Sheff's numbers obviously way down, but I feel like he could thrive in a new atmosphere. Still puts fear into opposing pitchers.

But you're probably right. Probably not a good idea. Especially if clubhouse character is an issue this season.

Did anyone else hear that Sox trainer Scottie Waugh is the great-grandson of English novelist Evelyn Waugh, author of Brideshead Revisited, etc.? Seriously. That's pretty cool.

Scottie Waugh has good things to say about Lugo's recovery. Which we're all holding our breath over, I'm sure. He can't really still have a job, can he?

Paul Byrd. Yeah I will admit I have called that guy a bum countless times but I like the move for right now for the sox. Time will tell but he and Colon could be difference makers. I also just scooped him up in fantasy.....yes my team is that bad.

There's no way they can take Lowrie out of the lineup right now. How many RBIs does the kid have in his stint?

I play in the same fantasy baseball league as Rich V and I can attest to his team being that bad (i've been in 1st all year by the way).

As far as Buchholz goes, he will likely still make another start or two (with Colon needing some more work and Wake on the DL). When one of those two come back he may be put in a long relief role to still let him work on pitches and get some work in. The key for Buchholz will be retaining his confidence, he has clearly lost belief in his pitches and body language shows it. While trying to preseve his confidence we need to also think more about how important these games are becoming. As Lou Merloni said, "it's go time, this is not the time to be messing around with young pithers and their confidence". Love Framingham Lou.

I can NOT believe the score of this game right now....up 10-0 in the first and I should be doing grad school work...instead i'm watching how terrible our bullpen can be with a 14-14 score on my TV.

This went from being a great night for the Sox to downright embarrassing. Calling a taxi to take me to the Tobin now...
