Remember last year, when Red Sox Nation was freaking out over a pudgy Josh Beckett? Well by that standard, Yankee fans should be burning down entire apartment buildings in the Bronx after looking at this picture of their 161 million dollar "ace" down in spring training.
You know how really fat guys with huge beer guts often take pictures with women who are 9 months pregnant in a contest to see who has the bigger stomach? (if you don't, then maybe I'm just weird, because I've seen it way too many times) ...well in this case, the Yankee "savior" would demolish the competition, even that chick who had 8 babies but no money to pay for them. But seriously, what happened here? Did he go on an eating rampage after signing the most lucrative deal for a pitcher in MLB history? What happened to putting on the pinstripes and becoming a different person? It doesn't look like CC took the off season as serious as many of our beloved Red Sox did (see Lugo, Dusty, Ortiz, Beckett, Lester, Tek, Jacoby and more).
Sure Yankee fans brush off the injury concerns, or the fact that he'll be pitching in a much better AL East division, or his post season struggles.....but how do you brush off the fact that he's 700 lbs?
A lot can change over the next month or two, and perhaps this is just a picture showing CC's "bad side", either way, I'm personally pretty happy that the Red Sox are not holding a 161 million dollar bag on this guy.

"that's a HUUGGEE BITCH!"
Our barbershop quartet back in skokie, illinois...I'm talking orca fat.
Unfortunatly Sabathia will do just fine for this year at least.
Agreed, Dale, at least in theory. But why so sure that size won't be an issue this year? I doubt it, but it's definitely one of the hopes in the back of my mind that I try not to talk about for fear of jinxing.
I didn't predict a down year as a result of this photo on purpose for fear of jinxing.
What has been the New York response to this so far joe?
I haven't seen any concerns over it in the NY papers or news. This little bit from Vacarro in the post is the only mention, I've seen to the mass CC showed up with to camp, and you can see, it's not exactly critical: "And it is the package in which they are delivered: that 300-plus pound frame, uncoiling with perfect mechanics, a beauty that makes pitching coaches swoon and managers drool." Yeah, that 300 pound frame is a beautifully coiled viper. Right. Who knows, they had Boomer all those years. They know a thing or two about what it means in the long run showing up to camp with a gut.
I've commented also elsewhere that the difference between Sabathia and Burnett and guys like Johnson, Contreras, Brown, Lieber, Vasquez...is that the new guys are younger and more importantly are strong mentally. And they have each other (and Sabathia) to share the spotlight among.
I think they have a pitcher's Murderer's Row (with Pettite possibly being the weak link). Fortunatly, I think they're going to have a hard time putting up consistent runs and their D stinks.
Hate to think Pettitte's the weak link. That's a scary rotation, if so. I'm not sure about Burnett, but I do think CC will have a good year. I also think Wang will quietly put up his typical 15-19 wins. If Hughes develops, which he very well could, it's a killer rotation.
This might be the year for Hughes. He's got good stuff.
Maybe Hughes and Buchholz have cosmically intertwined destinies, though, so that if this is Hughes's year, it will also be Clay's, so it's a wash.
Don't forget Hughes will start in AAA or the bullpen. Joba is the 4rth/5th starter no one has mentioned yet.
